I’ll admit it. I like oldies from the 60s and 70s (and I’m not talking about led zepplin or Jimi Hendrix either, I’m talking outright pop). Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong generation.
Nowadays pop music gives us about 3-5 good songs in the year. Good track, decent vocals, catchy tune. But where’s the content?
I don’t know what’s happened these past few decades but it seems like we’re singing for the sake of singing. What are the themes that come through these days?
- Relationships
- Bitching about life, etc
- Money + success (Kanye West music)
- Cities
- Umbrellas (just kidding)
- Partying
I know, I shouldn’t ask that much from the pop genre. Hmm ok, I’ll let you in on a secret. At the moment of writing this I’m not in front of my computer but rather sitting up in my bed writing into my notepad and watching the DVD of…
Ok! I’m watching the Concert at Central Park in 1981 given by no other than Simon and Garfunkel.
Alright, it’s out there. So what!? Anyway, I’ve heard the first three songs so far. They have been:
- Mrs Robinson
- Homeward Bound
- America
ALL FANTASTIC SONGS. I know that times have changed and rhythms/sounds do too but I would like to be WOWed the way S&Gs fans were throughout the mid 60s.
What I’m asking for is some musical talent with great content.
I’m a bit of a hypocrite. I grew up listening to gansta rap/commercial hip-hop and still enjoy some of today’s new artists. Anyway, POP MUSIC. What does everybody else think?
